Small businesses are the backbone of the American Economy. They create the most jobs and help to build strong families.
And, at some point, every small business owner needs to escape their business. It may be because you just want to do something different, or hit the beach to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. Perhaps you are sick of the travel, or have another completely separate business idea you want to pursue. Maybe you want to spend more time with your kids or your grandchildren.
Most business brokers will tell you the textbook successful business sale requires years of preparation. But what if you need to sell more quickly, like NOW?! or by the end of the year? Or in the next three months because my spouse just got their dream job in Florida?
Or, you may never have considered selling your business before today. After all, it’s kept you in a comfortable lifestyle for several years now, and it’ll probably continue to do so. And that very fact — your business is doing as well as its ever done — may in fact be a prudent reason to sell your business now, at the top of the market.
Probably the most important part of any exit strategy is knowing what you are going to do next, after you sell your business. Most of us dream of selling our business for a big wad of cash that we can go swimming in — like Scrooge McDuck in his vault — but the reality is that the all cash buyer who is going to pay 10x EBITDA in one lump sum is a mythical unicorn for all but the owners of the best-of-the-best-of-the-best businesses.
That’s why it is so important for you, as a business owner who wants to sell and doesn’t have years to develop a strategy to sell your business to the unicorn buyer, to instead focus on reaching a deal structure that provides you, as the seller, with what you need to get to where you want to be next in life.
I often ask the business owners I work with the following questions:
- Why are you selling? What problem are you trying to solve by selling your company?
- If we could waive a magic wand today and make the solution magically appear. what would that look like to you? Why is that important to you?
Let me help solve a problem for you. Fill out the contact form below and let’s see if if makes sense for you to sell me your business…
